03:11 pm - The Advantages of Closing a Few Doors
This article talks about how sometimes fewer options are better. More so, perhaps we need to be the ones to limit those options.

The Advantages of Closing a Few Doors

Nothing here I did not know before, but as is often the case, the author brings it into focus a bit more. And plus, for so many things we all "know better" and yet continue to do them anyway. So just knowing isn't good enough.

I do wish there wasn't the Gone with the Wind spoiler at the end though.

Okay. I can check two pieces of luggage, and take on a carry-on plus one extra. I'm thinking this'll be my laptop and my violin. I don't really need a purse, since I can fit quite a few extras in my laptop case. Or, y'know, just take a purse anyway and stash it in a duty-free bag if I buy something at the airport.

Also, Rasputina's playing in DC the night before I leave, which is 1:30 on Tuesday (one week zomgggg), meaning I should shoot to get to the airport three hours beforehand just to be safe. Things to think on.

Title: Yanked Awry
Fandom: Firefly
Pairing: Simon/River
Rating: NC-17
Disclaimer: Don’t own ’em, making no profit off ’em, etc.
Word Count: 2,082

Summary: Like a trick, an excellent prank, getting away with something extraordinary and no one the wiser. Co-starring nostalgia, exhibitionism, and herbs.

Notes: Contains consensual underage sex, consensual CSI, and other generally kinky stuff that makes me think I should probably not start writing fic while listening to a dance remix of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air theme.

10:00 pm - thanks to all who care

You definitely know who your true friends are when you're going through a difficult time. It's been a little over a week that my father's been in the hospital. He finally had surgery a couple days ago and thankfully he'll be alright. It's been a stressful week for my mom and I. My brother probably feels bad that he's so far away. But I really have to thank everyone for their support and prayers....I'm  grateful at how blessed my family has been to have so much care and encouragement pouring in from everywhere.

06:08 pm - i could be with the other threehorns
I've found that my problem with writing is that I don't do it in a formulaic manner.

Instead, I'll spew a bunch of words on a blank page and then go "okay, that's kinda cool, but how do I make it make sense?"

And afterward I'll reverse paragraphs, force certain phrases to fit just because I like them, dump a bucket of literary/mythological/architectural/whatever undertones I'm going for over the whole damn thing, then stand back and survey it and wonder what went wrong. I throw in things because I like the sound of them and shoehorn them into place, then worry about the cohesive whole later.

Like. Just now I was writing and started thinking about herbs for whatever reason. Brain went "ohh, neat, work that in somehow" and I did. Even though there was no damn reason to do it.

But I think it works. Even though you wouldn't think incestuous public sex called for it. Maybe it's just me. Maybe I'll edit it all out anyway. Maybe I should work more on writing stuff that I have a chance at getting paid for and stop scrutinizing fanworks.

Oh my God, I need to be in Korea already.

07:16 pm - concern yourself with the incredible
My God. I'm only five minutes into the second episode, but Torchwood kind of...sucks.

I'm giving it a chance, I really am. I'm not generally a sci-fi person, with a few exceptions, so maybe it's just taking me a little longer to come around. Or maybe it's the stiff acting and whack-ass script and feeling absolutely no connection with any of the characters. Eve Myles is adorable, so that's something--she reminds me a bit of a meat-on-her-bones Mia Kirshner with a much less annoying voice.

Also, [info]get_house_laid is open for posting and we've already got some fic up!

01:00 pm - WWOD?
I think one of the greatest challenges facing a President is how they react to an International crisis...This is where experience comes in to play.

When the Russians started playing the "Midnight Tank to Georgia", Obama or one of his 200 foreign policy staffers wrote a Note calling for calm and restraint. Then the next day when he had a rally celebrating his Vacation in Hawaii he promised "to go body surfing at some undisclosed location." Where is the bold action and the and the courage to talk to foreign dictators? Instead Obama decided "I'm going to get some shave ice.".

On the other hand McCain, who seemed to have grasped the gravity from the get-go and whose support for Georgia is long-standing. He took the lead from the outset, demanding on Friday morning an emergency meeting of NATO and Western aid to the fledgling democracy.

Experience counts.

10:14 pm - Golfing fool
For the past few years I have been playing golf about 3-5 times a year and never getting any better go figure...

For the past two months I have been playing just about every weekend. I have already dropped 7 strokes off my average 105 to 98. I hope to hit 90 by the end of the year.

Wednesday I get to play here http://www.halfmoonbaygolf.com/index.php?page=the_courses-the_ocean_course-course_tour

This course is amazing and I am playing at a huge discount.

Happy happy joy joy

12:35 pm - It's official! ... so I can talk about it now.
On Friday, I quit. I quit my job and accepted a new one. The new company's solution isn't as interesting as the product I have been working with, but the opportunity there is practically unlimited. I'm excited and scared... All tempered with being paid awesome money.

It hasn't really sunk in yet, but I'm getting there.

Last day here: 8/22
First day at new place: 8/25
First board meeting at new place: 8/27

04:04 am - Affabulation
I don't know how to go about explaining this. I definitely don't know if I'm going to post it to any comms. Basically, I wrote a few paragraphs a couple weeks back, thinking it would be interesting to try and churn out apocofic, then ended up squinting at them and filling things out today. Things got a little out of hand.

ETA: I've gone ahead and posted to [info]housefic. Thanks again to everyone who dropped in to give feedback.

Title: Affabulation
Fandom: House
Pairing: Cameron/Thirteen
Rating: R for violence
Disclaimer: Don’t own ’em, making no profit off ’em, etc.
Word Count: 1,304

Summary: Remy Hadley woke up between blood-drenched sheets and went to fix herself a snack. Her heart slipped free of her chest, catching on splintered shards of sternum, and landed on the floor with a despondent thump.

Warning: Lesbians, zombies, and the end of the world, sort of.

Oi. My connection with Gmail snapped and I couldn't get it back, and then I lost AIM as well. So, um, those of you I was talking with on either of those, I'm sorry. I've been having a little trouble with the 'Net these days.

I took my father to the ER today. It seems he's been really sick all week and this morning it just took a turn for the worse. He'll be in the hospital for the next couple of days. Apparently it has to do with his kidneys. One hand, I'm worried to death, but on the other hand, pissed off to hell at how stubborn he is and how he doesn't heed advice about his health. He's been diagnosed with diabetes, high blood pressure, hyper tension....all of that causing stress on his kidneys. He's been told to  change his lifestyle, modify his diet, and yet here we are.....stuck worrying about his condition.  I can't deal with this right now.

07:08 pm - The Shit I've Writ: July Edition
July wordcount: 9,559
2008 wordcount: 64,776

In Anger (House/Wilson; R; 1,600 words)
For an [info]rsl_bday_drive donor who wanted fic dealing with the aftermath of Postern. Pretty much an excuse to look into the darker side of the House/Wilson friendship, poke around with House's childhood, and throw Egypt trivia around, but I'm okay with that.

Clean Slate (Dead Poets Society: Neil/Todd; R; 1,860 words)
New Years Resolution prompt: "the exploration of a form of art other than theatre or poetry." I love writing these boys, especially Neil's POV, since every single Neil/Todd fic I've ever seen is from Todd's.

Waking Hours (Firefly: River/Simon; R; 721 words)
Somehow, I managed to forget how much I adore this show and the weirdly incestuous Simon/River dynamic. Since he's given up everything to save her, she tries to show appreciation in her own off-kilter way. Gratuitous but mild Nabokov-quoting.

Well-Heeled (The Devil Wears Prada: Andy/Emily; NC-17; 602 words)
I just don't get why everyone's all about the Andy/Miranda. Emily's snooty, bitter, and rife with potential for hatesex.

Ephemera
(Stardust movie: Captain Shakespeare/Humphrey; NC-17; 708 words)
I had to. Because Captain Shakespeare winks at Humphrey during the wedding at the end of the movie. And Humphrey totally doesn't seem to mind it. Unless anyone can prove otherwise, this is what happened next.

Navigation (Firefly: Simon/Inara; R; 431 words)
Simon gets a massage and Inara gets introspective. These two really didn't interact enough on the show, but it was beautiful when they did. I think I want to delve into that some more.

Morphometrics (Firefly: River/Simon; R; 519 words)
Because I wanted to write about River's downward spiral, which happens completely offscreen. Heavily influenced by the R. Tam Sessions.

Under
(Firefly: Mal/Simon; NC-17; 2,386 words (half the total wordcount))
[info]nakeno and me. Writing smut. Again. Semi-public sex never gets old.

Round Two
(Firefly: Simon/River; R; 732 words)
Twisted, honestly.

06:26 pm - that's crazy talk
Wow. I was sitting here humming Belle and Sebastian's "Fox in the Snow" and just realized that somewhere in there it had turned into an improvisational little number to the same tune: "Moose on a Jew."

Also, I had my meeting at the Korean embassy, had some more tutoring fun, and get to go back to the embassy and get my passport back tomorrow. So hopefully then I'll be about to work out the details of actually getting shipped over to Korea itself.

...I wonder if it'll be before or after Thao Nguyen comes to DC.

Still owe people House fic, still gleefully enjoying a Firefly binge. I'll get there, I swear!
